William Powell Obituary

William D. Powell, age 88, of Star Prairie, WI, passed away on Sunday, February 7, 2021, at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System.

William Deloy Powell was born January 25, 1933, in Eleva, WI, the son of William A. and Sadie (Seversen) Powell.  William’s mother passed when he was only three years of age and he was sent to live with his uncle and aunt for several years.  His father remarried Esther Lokken and William was reunited with his father and they lived in the Eau Claire, WI, area.  Bill worked in his youth at local farms and then joined the United States Air Force in December of 1950.  He served his country for several years where he was trained to be a teletype operator.  After being honorably discharged, Bill moved to Waukegan, IL, where he received training in tool and die making and apprenticed at Ford Aircraft and worked for Johnson Motors.  On June 18, 1957, Bill was joined in marriage to Carol J. Graham in Pine City, MN.  Bill and Carol lived in Waukegan for a short time and then resided in Grantsburg, Minong and Lampson, WI.  After 10 years in Lampson they moved to Star Prairie, WI, and Bill went to work for Doboy Packaging Machinery Products as a machinist.  He spent the rest of his working career with Doboy and retired in 1996.  Bill and Carol began traveling and made special trips to Alaska, Hawaii, Missouri, and Arizona.  They also continued to frequently visit the family cabin in Lampson where he enjoyed fishing.  Bill also enjoyed going to garage sales and flea markets looking for antiques to collect.  He was also a fan of old country western music, writing poems, camping, playing cards with relatives, and family picnics.  Bill was an extremely positive individual who would never let any circumstance drag him down.

Bill is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carol; three children, Julie Carlson of Osceola, WI, William (Julie) Powell of Roberts, WI, and Russell (Mary) Powell of Stillwater, MN; five grandchildren, Sarah, Scott, Nathan, Jacob and Michael; one great-granddaughter, Miley; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Esther; son-in-law, Greg Carlson; stepbrother, Arnold Lokken, and half-brother, Ronald Powell.

A private funeral service will be held for Bill at the Spooner Funeral Home.  Interment will be in the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner, WI.  Military honors will be accorded by the State of Wisconsin Military Funeral Honors Program.
