Neal Carter Obituary

Neal Brian Carter, age 83, passed away peacefully with his family at his side
on Friday, July 26, 2024 at the family cabin near Moose Lake in Hayward, WI.
He was born on October 23, 1940 in Mauston, WI, the son of Burns and Lillian
(Perkins) Carter. During his childhood, Neal lived with his family on the Lost
Wood Refuge in Kenmare, ND and then on the Necedah Wildlife Refuge in
Necedah, WI. He graduated from Necedah High School in 1958, thereafter
joining the Marine Corps.
Neal proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, 1958-
1962, at stations in both San Diego, California and Beaufort, South Carolina.
He was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Pauline Mary
Bagnowski on November 4, 1961 in Necedah, WI.
After finishing his service, they moved back to Wisconsin, settling in Biron
where they completed their family with a son and daughter. Neal worked for
Consolidated Papers for 40 years as an instrument technician. He served as a
Union Steward for IBEW 1147 and was a member of the EBP board.
Neal enjoyed taking his young family on numerous camping trips in Northern
Wisconsin and Canada. Many happy memories over the years were made
fishing, boating, and waterskiing. Neal’s passion for musky fishing lives on in
multiple generations of his family and friends.
He was involved with many clubs and organizations over the years. He served
as president of the local Consolidated Musky Club for 15 years, president of
the board of directors for the Biron Credit Union, and trustee on the Necedah
High School Alumni Association.
Neal was an avid supporter of his children, nieces, and nephews as he
attended every extracurricular activity he could.  Hunting was a favorite pastime.
He successfully hunted whitetail deer every year at the Necedah Wildlife Refuge
and at his daughter’s Wisconsin farm. He also pursued duck, goose, and turkey
hunting in Wisconsin. After his son moved to Wyoming, Neal started a 30-year
western hunting adventure, hunting predators, pheasant, antelope, mule deer,
elk, and moose. Memories were made with his son, grandchildren, and other
family members who traveled west with him to hunt.
After Neal retired, he and Pauline went south for the winter to Alabama for 16
years, becoming snowbirds and enjoying the milder weather. Many good times
were had with their winter family.
Recently, summers were spent at the family cabin in the Northwoods of
Wisconsin, with 4 generations stopping in to stay when they could and
cherishing every moment. Making the most of family time was of great
importance to Neal.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Pauline Carter of Biron, WI; his children,
Mark (Debra) Carter of Gillette, WY and Colleen (Darrell) Pingel of Kendall, WI;
his grandchildren, Cody (Erin) Carter, Sawyer (Zachary) Poitra, Willow Pingel,
and Lindsey Carter; his great-grandchildren, Rylan Poitra, Emma Poitra, Eli
Poitra, Theodora Carter, and Josephine Carter; his brother, Bruce (Carol)
Carter; his sister-in-law, Sharon Carter; and many nieces, nephews, and dear
friends.
In addition to his parents, Neal is preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-
law, Barbara and Ted Williams; his brother, Harold Carter; and his sister-in-law,
Ellen Steen Carter.
Special thanks to Berniece and Gene Albrecht for the tremendous amount of
help and support they provided during the years of Neal’s illness.
A memorial service for Neal will be held at the Necedah Methodist Church,
Saturday, September 21st. Visitation at 10:00 am, service at 11:00 am, a
luncheon to follow at the VFW Hall in Necedah.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Neal’s name to the Necedah Methodist Church.
