Lawrence Patrick Baldus, affectionately known to family and friends as “Beaver” or “Larry”, passed away peacefully at his home in Cable, WI July 2nd, 2026. He was 76 years old.
Born in Milwaukee, WI, Larry was the third child of Lawrence and Virginia Baldus. He was raised on Milwaukee’s East Side, a neighborhood he called home for many years, and attended St. Peter and Paul Grade School and Messmer High School. In his early working life he was a dedicated employee at Evinrude Motors, and later drove for Barry Trucking. He was also former husband to Bernadette Broecker.
A true woodsman at heart, Larry’s genuine passion was always found in the outdoors. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and hiker who spent countless hours in the field, training and hunting alongside his award-winning German Shorthaired Pointers. Sharing his love for nature, he also volunteered his time at the Schlitz Audubon Center in Bayside.
In 1988, a pivotal life event led Larry to re-evaluate his path, and answer the call of the Northwoods. He moved to Cable establishing a life deeply rooted in the outdoor lifestyle he cherished. There, he worked as a landscaper, and later as a butcher at Rondeau’s Shopping Center, while actively volunteering for the Birkebeiner as well as a local wildlife center. Each year, he eagerly anticipated his annual Spring trip down to Lake Keesus, to visit with family and friends.
Larry was a man who lived life entirely on his own terms, a rare quality that earned him the genuine love and respect of everyone who knew him. He lived the kind of quiet, authentic and independent life that many only wish they could.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Virginia. He is survived by his siblings: Laura Murphy, George (Lorie), Louise (Jeff) Bula, Virginia Quick, Anthony (Eloise), and Philip (Brenda). He leaves behind his niece Carrie, and nephews Andrew, Adam, Phil, James and Steven, as well as seven great nieces and one great nephew. He will be greatly missed by many wonderful friends and family across the state, including his dear friend Kim.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 12th, 2026 from 1-4pm at The American Legion Post in Cable, WI, and an additional gathering will be held in the Milwaukee area, on a date to be determined. Anyone wishing to share photos of Larry is encouraged to bring them to be added to a Remembrance Board.
Larry’s ashes will be placed at his favorite hunting site. Hayward Funeral Home is assisting the family.
