Elaine Gillis, age 94, of Hayward, WI, passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at her home surrounded by her family.
Elaine was born on December 2, 1930, in Hayward. She was united in marriage to Don Gillis, with whom she shared 43 wonderful years before his passing. Elaine was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Elaine had a vibrant life. During her time at Hayward High School, she worked for Judge Johnson in his law practice and became known for her skill in shorthand. After graduation, she worked for many years at the Hayward Clinic with Drs. Sahs, Callahan, Krueger, and Baertsch. A passionate lover of life, Elaine and Don enjoyed their time together dancing, snowmobiling, golfing, and bowling. Elaine was especially proud of her skill in both golf and bowling, often recalling the fun and camaraderie of these activities.
Elaine was preceded in death by her husband Don, her parents, one brother, one grandson, and two brothers-in-law.
She is survived by her five children: Dan (Connie) Gillis, Steve (Jane) Gillis, Gary (Kim) Gillis, Jody (Todd) Petit, and Deb (Frank) Shafranski. Elaine was the proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Shirley Koznetski, Peggy Cox, Vicki (Mike) Fox, and many nieces and nephews.
A private family gathering will be held, with a burial service to follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Hayward.
Honorary bearers will be her grandsons: Andy Gillis, Josh Gillis, Ryan Shafranski, Zak Mohr, and Dawson Petit.
Elaine’s memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
