Donald Leroy Schmitz

Donald Leroy Schmitz, age 93, of Gordon, WI, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 10, 2022 at the Burnett Medical Continuing Care Center in Grantsburg, WI.  He was born on June 21, 1929 in Milwaukee, WI, the son of Joseph and Mary (Novotny) Schmitz.  He was united in marriage to Almara Rein on February 26, 1949 in St Paul, MN. 

Donald worked for 3M for over 40 years.  He loved playing cribbage with family and friends, both at work and at home. He also enjoyed all kinds of card games, especially poker. Donald was a talented wood carver and loved fishing and hunting with his sons.

He is survived by his children, Larry Schmitz of Hayward, WI, Greg Schmitz of Gordon, WI, Jeff (Sue) Schmitz of White Bear Lake, MN, Kim (Brian) Ferguson of Lake Elmo, MN, and Jody (Gary) Mortensen of Trego, WI; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-seven great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

In addition to his parents, Donald is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Almara; his son Donald Jr.; his granddaughter, Jessica; his daughters-in-law, Pat and Joan Schmitz; two brothers, Bill and Bob Schmitz; and a sister, Lorraine Schriber.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at Kessler & Maguire Funeral Home, 640 W 7th Street in St. Paul, MN, where visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of the service.  Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights, MN.
