Lorraine Marie Heitkamp Cable was born in 1924 to Joseph and Marie Schanke (Buchta) Heitkamp in Burnett County. She grew up on the family farm west of Spooner with 3 brothers and one sister. She enjoyed life on the farm, often reminiscing about Heitkamp Saturday night barn dances. After graduating from Spooner High School, she received a teaching certificate from Superior Normal College and taught for one year at Gaslyn school. In 1945, she married George Washington Cable, shortly after he was discharged from the army. They bought a home near Cyclone Lake, where they raised their 9 children.
In early 1960’s, they bought the Southside Grocery, which they ran until 1977. Lorraine and George both enjoyed many activities including dancing, golf, bowling and pool. Lorraine retired from Spooner Hardware Hank at age 71, after over 30 years of retail service in the Spooner area where she was well-known.
She enjoyed her activities until age 75, when she suffered a stroke. Although it limited her active participation, she still loved gathering with family and friends. She lived at Hilltop apartments, Country Terrace, then Maple Ridge where she was a favorite among staff and other residents.
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband and daughter, Cheryl (Cable) Melton, son-in-law Rick Gilberg and son-in-law Charles Larson
She is survived by 8 children, Bonita Larson, Janet (Greg) Jensen, David, Patti Gilberg, Joel, Peggy Frey, Penny (Frank) Scalzo, Lorene, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
