It is difficult to think of a quote or saying that exemplifies the life of Kevin “KC” Hansen. He enthusiastically embraced any challenge he faced, whether it be teaching a young golfer how to putt, trying to catch the elusive muskie, or battling cancer. Quite possibly the thing he will be most remembered for and why we will miss him greatly is that he had the ability to make each and every person he came in contact with feel like they mattered (because they did) to him. His gratitude was overwhelming and no one left his presence not knowing they were loved. A classic text he sent to Ashley was: “The only two times I am proud of you is when I am sleeping and when I am awake. Love you!”
KC was born in St. Paul, Minnesota to Bruce and Carol Hansen on July 9, 1961. His dad was elated for his arrival and the start of the Hansen hockey team. He graduated from Hudson High School in Hudson, WI in 1979 and graduated from UW-River Falls four years later. He married his precious Rosie in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1995. Ashley and Jack arrived in Mexico in 1996 and 2001. KC loved his family and made them laugh every day of his life. He was proud of his children and their passion for life.
It is almost impossible to list all the things that KC was passionate about. He enjoyed traveling to different countries- especially Mexico, Cuba, and Ireland. Family trips to Mexico to see Rosie’s family and good friends were the highlight of any year they were able to go. You could always find him enjoying a Cuban cigar and tacos al pastor while telling stories that had everyone crying from laughter. One of his favorite trips was playing golf at Pebble Beach with his childhood friends.
KC was recently recognized as a 25-year member of the PGA. He was passionate about golf (and hockey) and loved helping people improve their game. In recent years he worked as the Technology Integration Specialist at Hayward Middle School and he cherished his interactions with the students and staff there. One family shared that their child said: “Mom, I sure am going to miss him at school every week saying, ‘Hey, where do you have hockey this weekend?’”
Fishing was another one of KC’s passions. He had shared that his only regret in life was not being able to catch a muskie with Len! He was, however, known as the “crappie-whisperer”. We will never see a Lund fishing boat without thinking of him.
He is survived by Rosie, Ashley and Jack; his father, Bruce Hansen; his father and mother-in- law, Chuy and Tere Covarrubias; his sister Kelli (Steve), sister Traci (Dan), brother Duke, brother JP, sister Molli (Kenny), his MANY nieces and nephews, a few grand nieces and nephews, sisters and brother in laws and so many loving friends. He is preceded in death by his mother, Carol.
He will be missed. He was fully persuaded that God was with him in every second of his life. His positivity, generosity, kindness, and humor inspire us to be better people for having known him. As he says on the golf course, “Just take it one shot at a time.”
There will be a Memorial Service held at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hayward, Wisconsin on Sunday, January 29, 2017 beginning at 2:00 p.m. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Father Gerard Willger will be officiating. There will also be a gathering of family and friends held at The Steakhouse & Lodge in Hayward, WI starting at 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers donations would be appreciated by the family to establish a scholarship thru the Hayward School in Kevin’s name.
